Who needs to register as a nurse in Mauritius?

All individuals intending to practice nursing professionally in Mauritius must be registered with the Nursing Council of Mauritius. This includes:

General Nurses
Mental Health Nurses
Specialized Nurses
Midwives
State Enrolled Nurses
Assistant nurse

What are the eligibility criteria for registration?

To register, applicants generally must:

Hold the relevant nursing qualification (e.g., diploma in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, or midwifery)
Be of good character, with no convictions for fraud or dishonesty
Not have been removed from any nursing register abroad due to professional misconduct or negligence
Not suffer from any mental or physical incapacity that may impede nursing duties
Pay the prescribed registration fee

What if I was trained abroad?

Foreign-trained nurses must provide:

Detailed syllabus of their nursing programme
Transcript of training from the awarding institutions
Police Clearance certificate from their country of origin
Documentary evidence of having practice Nursing following post-graduation,

The Nursing Council may assess the equivalency of the foreign qualifications and may require the applicant to undergo additional assessments or training.

Do I need to renew my registration?

Yes, nurse registration typically must be renewed annually.

What happens if my registration is denied?

You will receive an explanation and may have the right to appeal the decision or reapply after meeting specific conditions.

Can I practice without registration?

No, it is illegal to practice nursing or midwifery in Mauritius without being registered under the Nursing Council Act. Engaging in such practice may result in legal penalties.
